Craigentinny Rail Depot, Edinburgh

Client: Scottish Rail
Type of works: contracted to install 3m high Betta absorptive acoustic barrier

The Betta Group has won a contract with Raynesway Construction Limited to supply and install a 3m high Betta absorptive acoustic barrier at the Craigentinny Rail Depot, Edinburgh. The Group liased with consultant engineers Pell Frischmann to design an absorptive barrier to meet the site's noise reduction requirement to the neighbouring residential properties, as well as presenting a tough absorptive face to the rail yard side of the barrier.

The Betta absorptive noise barrier has a variety of finishes and the preference on this contract is galvanised posts, pressure treated Tanalith E Green, vertical timber backing to the residential side (shown above) and an absorptive face of 17 chamfered vertical timber trim per bay over a weldmesh. Pell Frischmann required a really tough surface to this face so a heavy 50 x 50 x 3mm galvanised weldmesh is being used between the timber trims and the breathable membrane, replacing the standard fine black weldmesh.

The Betta absorptive acoustic barrier has been given a sound insulation rate of 26dB and classified as category B3 in accordance with BS EN 1793-2:1998 and 20dB sound absorption, category A4, in accordance with BS EN 1793-1:1998.
