The recently completed Flood Protection Scheme for Drumnadrochit, aimed to reduce the risk of flooding and provide protection for 37 residential and commercial properties in the village. The works are in response to severe flooding in the area in the past.
The flood in 2005 caused damage to around 20 homes and the sewerage works. The 2005 flood was significant in that it was caused by a large tidal surge in Loch Linnhe.
The Highland Council approved the scheme and the work was carried out by RJ McLeod, one of Scotland’s largest privately owned civil engineering and building contractors. With 70 years of successfully delivering solutions to meet their client’s needs.
The work entailed earth embankments and a Flood Defence Wall. The wall was a concrete construction, topped with Coping stones. Fernhill Stone cladding was used as a stone facing. This enhanced the overall look of the wall and help it blend into the surrounding landscape.
The Fernhill Stone used was Mountain Ledgestone Grey, with the grey colour being the best local match. The average thickness of the cladding is 35mm with various lengths between 50cm to 20cm. The stone was pointed with Fernhill Stone mortar.
