Garden Room Project brings out the best of BSW Timber

BSW Timber has contributed products to help create a spectacular garden building to grace the grounds of Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

The Garden Room, in Ninewells Community Garden – known as the “Leaf Room” due to its distinctive roof shape – is the result of a design competition organised by NHS Health Facilities Scotland in partnership with The Forestry Commission Scotland, to create a safe, accessible and inclusive outdoor building to encourage garden participation for people all ages and abilities.

Arbroath-based architects The Voigt Partnership created an innovative design inspired by a folding leaf, with its roof shape overhanging a rectangular-shaped room underneath. A primary ridge beam runs diagonally through the ‘folded leaf’ roof, which is supported by secondary rafters and external columns.

BSW provided a range of products supplied to create a unique showcase for home-grown Scottish timber.

The huge eight-metre ridge beam and external posts were supplied using Douglas Fir, while BSW’s ‘easi-edge’ timber was used to create the main room panels. Because of the unusual shape of the roof, the room was part-assembled at BSW Timber Systems, the company’s timber frame factory in Dumfries.

External cladding was machine-brushed to accentuate the natural beauty of the timber grain, and features an attractive tanashades brown coating.

And, as a final touch, BSW’s new Timeless Timber enhanced grip decking was installed, providing an extra safety feature, seamlessly merging with the interior flooring to create the effect of bringing the outside garden indoors.
