What was the project brief?
Great Baddow High School in Chelmsford wanted a bespoke dining canopy that could match its aesthetics and building requirements, by complementing the architecture and following the roofline of the reception. The staff thought the ideal model would have a modern look and side panels to keep out the elements. It was also essential that the shelter could house students and staff alike at lunchtimes so they could always eat outdoors in a fun and attractive environment. We were thrilled when the team contacted us for their expertise.

What was the dining canopy solution?
As aesthetics were so important to this client, their design team got involved at an early stage to create a model that suited their specific needs. They built a bespoke Motiva Linear™ for Great Baddow High School in order to do this, making use of their manufacturing capacity that allows us to diverge from their regular products. They recommended the Motiva Linear™ element as its monopitch straight roof could match the school’s roofline on its reception building and its asymmetric look had the classy feel they were looking for. What’s more, they installed the dining canopy with Jet Black steelwork and an Opal roof which felt sleek, and polycarbonate and glazing side panels to protect the children from the unpredictable British weather at break times.

What was the result of the bespoke shelter?
Great Baddow High School was delighted with the dining canopy; the bespoke structure met its needs efficiently and the way it worked with the existing architecture was a great success. It has created a welcoming place for students to gather, eat, chat and have fun during their breaks and enjoy time away from the stresses of lessons and their daily life as young people. The side panels are also a handy feature that helps to make the shelter usable throughout the year. It was wonderful to work closely with this customer to create a product so special and tailored to them.

About the client
Great Baddow High School is an institution for 11 to 18-year-olds, of which its staff are very proud. It specialises in Science and Sport, and it has a Sixth Form which a large number of its students progress to. What’s more, it puts emphasis on providing enrichment opportunities for its learners and on helping them to become well-rounded individuals. Building a canopy for the team here was a pleasant experience, thanks to their kindness and co-operation.

This customer is situated in Chelmsford, the county town of Essex. This busy city, close to London, has a whole host of events for different ages to enjoy – from the country music festival Dixie Fields to 3foot People Festival, the UK’s largest festival for pre-schoolers. For the more culturally-minded, it has attractions such as Chelmsford Museum, Chelmsford Cathedral and the restored Grade II listed Hylands House.
