This sports facility in Victoria Recreation Ground provides a new home for Portslade Bowls Club. The project was nominated for two categories in 2022’s SPRA awards: Best New Construction 2020 and Best Sustainability 2020.
The specification
The Bauder Single Ply Thermofol Green Roof System was specified for this project. This single source, lightweight system provides a (U-Value) of 0.15 W/m²K and incorporates a multifunctional water retention and filter layer. The weather tight roof covering is secure and free draining.
Applied products
XF301 Sedum Blanket: A single layer sedum system with GRO compliant substrate. The sedum blanket contains 17 species of sedum and provides instant coverage on an extensive green roof as it is grown for circa 12 months.
AL40: An edge trim that frames and retains the XF301 system, securing the system to the waterproofing underneath.
SDF Mat: A multi-functional drainage and filtration layer which prevents the roots of sedum plants from becoming waterlogged.
Bauder Thermofol PVC in Blue Grey: A reinforced PVC waterproofing membrane for mechanically fixed or adhered installation. Stated within BBA certificate 06/4354, the Thermofol PVC waterproofing membranes have a service life in excess of 35 years.
Bauder PIR FA flat board: Rigid urethane insulation, faced with aluminium foil on both sides. This product has a zero ODP and a Green guide rating of ‘A’.
BauderTEC KSD Mica: An elastomeric bitumen self-adhesive air and vapour control layer with 2.5mm depth.
Deck: Plywood
The technical and sustainability expertise and support available from the Bauder technical team and area manager, coupled with the comprehensive guarantee package made Bauder the ideal supplier to work with on this project.
The installation
It was paramount that the timing of the delivery and resources available were planned effectively to ensure that the Green Roof was not compromised due to the Bauder XF301 vegetation blanket being harvested as a live product. Working together as a team was key to a successful project delivery.
All waterproofing systems were installed through workmanship that complied with current Codes of Practice, BS6229. By joining forces with approved contractor ICS roofing and taking a collaborative approach, the installation of this project was smooth, and all installation challenges were identified and resolved at the design stage.
This installation follows the ‘Safe2Torch’ guidance produced by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) as a heat welding method was used to install the Single Ply Membrane.
