Hospital Refurbishment Project Provides Improved Efficiencies

Daikin Applied has recently been involved in a refurbishment project to improve the energy efficiency of a Spanish hospital to minimise its environmental impact.

Total cooling capacity: 4MW

About the products and the project

For this project Daikin Applied provided 3 screw inverter chillers, two water-cooled chillers and one air-cooled chiller. They will replace old non inverter units in the HVAC system of the Spanish hospital. Thanks to the installation of more advanced technology, Daikin managed to meet the efficiency targets, helping achieve energy savings, reducing operating costs, and cutting CO2 emissions by 25%.

To achieve these goals, the project required an environmentally friendly HVAC concept. That is why it was decided to use chillers featuring the HFO refrigerant R-1234ze. This refrigerant set the new standard for environmentally friendly cooling systems, with a GWP (Global Warming Potential) 200 times lower than R-134a. R-1234ze refrigerant paired up with Daikin’s Single Screw compressor technology, ensured that the energy efficiency targets were met.

More about the project

As with all hospital projects, reliability was another very important aspect in determining the best product, more so as the chillers needed to provide cooling for laboratories and technical equipment as well. A reliable solution was fundamental to ensure that both the comfort and the process cooling needs of the hospital were met.

Screw inverter technology by Daikin plays a key role in the market leading reliability of our chillers. Daikin has a history of leadership in the field of single screw compressor chillers, which have been installed globally for over 20 years.

Daikin screw compressors are unique in their design, using one main screw meshing with twin star rotors to produce volume matching compression cycle. Due to the main rotor, balanced in both radial and axial directions, the compressor bearing is extremely reliable, providing a life span that is longer than conventional screw compressors. Daikin’s single screw compressor has just three moving parts which reduces the likelihood of failure and keeps operation costs low.
