Type of works: Installation of combined bomb film to entire building
Solar Shield carried out the installation of a combined solar/security film to help restore the Millbank Tower in London. From its position beside the Thames, the building is a prominent feature on the London skyline.
The final stage in the external refurbishment of the 33-storey tower was completed using stainless-steel 165 film. This was selected on stringent aesthetic and technical criteria, due to the Millbank Tower being Grade II listed.
The film improves the visual appeal of the building and is lightly tinted with a semi-reflective finish, giving an attractive and uniform appearance. It also benefits the working environment by cutting down glare and heat gain, whilst maintaining high levels of natural light. Energy savings will be made as the film reduces the need for air conditioning and heating.
The film has a scratch-resistant coating with a solar energy rejection of 54%. It reduces ultra-violet light by at least 98%. The anti-shatter property of the film holds fragments together in the event of a bomb blast or impact.
The installation required a team of four men, working through the evening and night, approximately three months to complete. The film itself has a 10-year warranty.
